excerpt from holy patterns (short story : 2022) ~
"Although her family regularly attended church, Selva never felt swayed by it. She preferred watching other churchgoers in chorus to doing the crooning herself. The preacher’s wife and her posse praised as if possessed by the Holy spirit itself, but always, with unwavering consistency, checked that their Sunday gloves were sufficiently rolled up when shaking hands with those less fortunate. They prayed fervently that these sinners fall into God’s loving grace, all the while pocketing their offerings with the same righteousness that they took communion. Selva held a deep belief that there was a divine, likely feminine, force, and found nihilists quite arrogant to believe that they spontaneously and uniquely spawned, but as long as others didn’t force their convictions on her she felt no need to voice that sentiment."
